Uber Eats customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area may soon have their orders delivered by a Waymo self-driving car as part of a new service launching this week. The collaboration between Uber and Waymo, which was announced last year, is now officially extending to deliveries. This marks the first time Uber Eats will utilize Waymo’s vehicles for delivery services. Previously, Uber Eats had partnered with companies like Cartken, Motional, Nuro, and Serve Robotics for autonomous deliveries in other markets.
The new service is currently limited to users in Phoenix, Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe, with ordering available from select merchants. However, Uber mentioned that the service areas will expand, and more restaurants will become eligible for autonomous deliveries in the near future.
Orders will be delivered using Waymo’s Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles. Standard fees will apply for delivery, but customers will not be charged for tips when using Waymo for deliveries.
Uber highlighted that the addition of food delivery to their partnership with Waymo aligns with their goal of promoting zero-emission transportation and driving innovation in Phoenix and beyond. While the service is only available in Phoenix for now, Waymo’s core ride-hailing service is operating in parts of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
There was no mention of any plans to expand Waymo deliveries to other cities in the future.
