Former Twitter executive Nick Caldwell is suing Elon Musk and X, alleging a breach of contract and failure to pay severance and benefits after resigning from the company in 2022.
The lawsuit claims that following Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the company falsely accused Caldwell and other executives of misconduct, cheating them out of $200 million in severance benefits.
Caldwell, now the chief product officer for Peloton, resigned from Twitter for good reason after the acquisition. Musk tweeted a video of his entrance into Twitter’s headquarters prior to the acquisition, later changing the company name to X.
Twitter accepted Caldwell’s resignation triggering a termination protection policy, but then claimed he was terminated for cause. Musk allegedly accused Caldwell of misconduct to avoid paying severance benefits owed to him.
The lawsuit names several individuals from SpaceX and Tesla, including Musk, as defendants in the case. Caldwell’s attorneys state he is owed around $19.3 million in severance benefits plus interest, along with other compensations.
Musk and X have not yet responded to requests for comment, while Caldwell’s attorneys declined to comment and referred to the filing for further information. The lawsuit does not mention the recent passing of Caldwell’s wife.
