Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, known for their legal battle against Mark Zuckerberg over the idea for Facebook, have invested $4.5 million worth of bitcoin in Real Bedford Football Club (RBFC), making it the first football club powered by bitcoin. RBFC, a non-league, semiprofessional club from Bedford, England, was purchased in 2022 by bitcoin investor and podcaster Peter McCormack. The Winklevoss twins will now serve as co-owners of RBFC, alongside McCormack.
Cameron Winklevoss stated that the decision to co-own RBFC with McCormack was based on their shared early involvement in bitcoin and the qualities it demonstrates in individuals. McCormack plans to use the investment to build a new training center for the club without selling any of the bitcoin, using it as a reserve fund instead.
The Winklevoss twins join other American celebrities like Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in investing in little-known U.K. soccer clubs, showing a growing trend of foreign investment in the British football industry.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the billionaire twins behind the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, recently announced a $4.5 million investment in Real Bedford Football Club (RBFC), a small English soccer team. Alongside bitcoin investor Peter McCormack, they now co-own the club, making RBFC the “first football club powered by bitcoin.” The decision was driven by a shared vision and conviction in bitcoin, with plans to use the investment for infrastructure and a new training center. The Winklevoss twins join a growing trend of American celebrities investing in U.K. soccer clubs, following the footsteps of actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds who bought Wrexham AFC in 2021.
