Autonomous delivery drone startup Zipline announced on Friday that it has completed its 1 millionth delivery to customers and is now looking to establish partnerships with restaurants as part of its next phase of growth.

Based in San Francisco, Zipline specializes in designing, constructing, and operating autonomous delivery drones. The company works with a wide range of clients, including over 4,700 hospitals such as the Cleveland Clinic and major brands like Walmart and GNC. With investments totaling over $500 million from backers like Sequoia Capital, a16z, and Google Ventures, Zipline has gained recognition as a CNBC Disruptor 50 company.

The company’s zero-emission drones have flown over 70 million autonomous commercial miles across four continents, delivering more than 10 million products. Zipline achieved its 1 millionth delivery milestone by transporting two bags of IV fluid from a distribution center in Ghana to a local health facility.

In the midst of its expansion efforts, Zipline is set to onboard partnerships with Panera Bread in Seattle, Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, and Jet’s Pizza in Detroit. CEO Keller Rinaudo Cliffton aims to escalate the company’s delivery volume, targeting 1 million deliveries per day in the future.

Rinaudo Cliffton emphasized the company’s focus on healthcare, quick commerce, and food delivery markets, noting that the move towards restaurant partnerships aligns with the growing demand for instant food delivery services. He highlighted the speed, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits of Zipline’s autonomous delivery model compared to traditional delivery apps.

Panera Bread’s Chief Operating Officer Ron Bellamy expressed optimism about partnering with Zipline for deliveries in Seattle, anticipating that the costs will be competitive with current third-party delivery services. Bellamy believes that if the service proves to be economical and improves the overall customer experience, consumers will embrace it.
