Apple has introduced its latest M4 chip, the most powerful Apple Silicon processor to date. The new chipset is based on the second-generation 3nm technology and powers the new iPad Pro models with ‘Tandem OLED’ screens. It features up to 10 CPU cores and an upgraded Neural Engine that supports up to 38 trillion operations per second, enhancing on-device AI tasks on the new iPad Pro.

The M4 chip, revealed during the iPad Pro launch, includes 28 billion transistors and consists of four performance cores and six efficiency cores with improved machine learning accelerators. It offers 1.5 times faster CPU performance compared to the M2-powered iPad Pro models.

Additionally, the M4 chip introduces hardware-accelerated ray tracing to the iPad Pro and delivers the same GPU performance as M2 models while consuming less power. The on-device AI performance on the M4 chip has been enhanced significantly, with the Neural Engine capable of 38 trillion operations to enable features like Live Captions and Visual Look Up.

This chip is the first Apple Silicon to debut on a non-Mac computer and is tailored to power the new ‘Tandem OLED’ technology on the iPad Pro. It is set to drive upcoming Mac and MacBook models in the following months.
