Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of 3,878 Cybertrucks to address a “stuck pedal” issue that was highlighted in a viral TikTok video shared by owner Jose Martinez. This issue involves a pad on the accelerator pedal coming loose and getting trapped in the interior trim, leading to unintended acceleration. Tesla will replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly at no cost to the owners.
The company discovered that an “unapproved change” introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal, which reduced the retention of the pad. Tesla became aware of this issue on March 31, 2024, and decided to recall the Cybertrucks on April 12.
Since the unveiling event on Nov. 30, 2023, Tesla has delivered fewer than 4,000 Cybertrucks. The company reported disappointing first-quarter vehicle deliveries for 2024, totaling 386,810 cars, an 8.5% drop from the same quarter last year. The NHTSA confirmed receiving three vehicle owner complaints about the Cybertruck and said it uses various data sources, including social media, to monitor such issues.
