Elon Musk recently made it mandatory for Tesla employees in North America to install and demonstrate the latest version of the company’s premium driver assistance system, known as “FSD,” to customers before vehicle delivery. This decision was communicated in an email to staff on Monday, with Musk insisting on showcasing the capabilities of the supervised FSD system through a short test ride with customers.
While Tesla’s vehicles come with a standard driver assistance system called Autopilot, the FSD option, priced at $199 per month for most North American customers, offers additional features. It’s important to note that Tesla’s FSD system does not make cars autonomous, and drivers must remain vigilant and ready to take control of the vehicle when using FSD or FSD Beta.
In a separate memo, Tesla is urging its employees to sign up for extra shifts to ensure timely vehicle deliveries by the end of the first quarter. Salaried employees are requested to join in the delivery process, while hourly employees may be eligible for additional compensation for their efforts.
The company is facing pressure to maintain year-over-year delivery numbers for the first quarter, with predictions of a slight decline in deliveries compared to the previous year. Musk also announced that all US Tesla cars capable of FSD will have a one-month trial period for the system.
Despite these efforts, Tesla’s shares have seen a decline of about 30% year to date, closing at $172.63 on Monday.
