Talks of the new second generation Haval H9 entering the Australian market have begun, and we recently had the chance to test drive the vehicle in China.
For those in the market for a seven-seat SUV, Great Wall Motors (GWM) already has the Tank 500 model available. However, there is a segment of the market seeking the same seating capacity and comfort without the extreme off-road capabilities of the Tank, and that’s where the Haval H9 is likely to fit.
The new Haval H9 is offered in China with a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine, as well as a 2.4-liter diesel option. With the diesel engine’s compatibility in question due to Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, the petrol engine with 167kW seems like the likely choice for the Australian market.
The exterior of the new H9 boasts a more boxy design compared to its predecessor, which is expected to appeal to SUV enthusiasts in Australia. The interior has seen significant upgrades, resembling that of more expensive European vehicles. The high-quality finishes and advanced technology make the H9 a compelling option in the market.
The second row of seats is spacious enough for three adults, while the third row is best suited for smaller adults or children. The driving experience of the H9 was positive, with the 2.0-liter engine proving to be capable even with a full load.
While not as hardcore as the Tank 500, the Haval H9 offers decent off-road capabilities with its 224mm ground clearance and all-wheel drive system. The real test will be the pricing and specifications that GWM can offer for the Australian market, as they continue to introduce newer and improved models.
We are eager to see the H9 on Australian roads soon, with GWM likely to deliver a right-hand drive version within the next 12 months. It will be interesting to see how the Australian market responds to the more expensive but well-equipped Haval models.

The price and specifications for the Australian market have yet to be confirmed, but GWM is known for introducing newer and more improved models. If the H9 is brought to Australia, it could arrive within the next 12 months in right-hand drive. Buyers can expect a comfortable and capable SUV suitable for family outings and light off-road adventures.
