The BMW X2 range has arrived in Australia, featuring the first-ever iX2.

BMW is emphasizing electrification, offering six electric models under the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold in Australia. Two of these models are iX2s, with the 2024 BMW iX2 xDrive30 being the focus of this review. Priced at $85,700 before on-road costs, the iX2 xDrive30 is $2800 more than the sDrive20 grade while offering more features.

At the recent media launch in Tasmania, we tested the X2 and iX2 on the winding roads outside Hobart. Is choosing the electric X2 over petrol versions worth it? Keep reading to find out.

The BMW iX2 xDrive30, the model we drove, is priced from $85,700 plus on-road costs. There are two versions of the iX2 available in Australia, with the xDrive30 being a dual-motor model.

The interior of the BMW iX2 is comparable to the X1, featuring the BMW Curved Display with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch curved touchscreen running the latest Operating System 9. The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a variety of digital features. Front seat comfort is enhanced by electric seat adjustment, memory presets, and optional massaging and heating functions.

The iX2 offers ample storage space and practicality, with options for personalized ambient lighting and trim inlays. The second row is spacious, despite the sloping roofline affecting headroom. The iX2’s boot has a volume of 525 liters with the rear seats up and 1400 liters with the rear bench folded down.

The iX2 xDrive30 features a dual-motor electric drivetrain with a total system power of 230kW and 494Nm of torque. It has a 64.8kWh li-ion battery, offering a claimed range of 395km. The iX2 xDrive30 is capable of fast charging up to 130kW.

During our test drive, the iX2 xDrive30 exhibited strong performance with immediate power delivery and a smooth driving experience. The car felt composed on the road, with accurate steering, strong grip levels, and minimal road and wind noise.

The iX2 xDrive30 comes well-equipped with safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Optional packages offer further enhancements, such as metallic paint and a panoramic sunroof.

Overall, the BMW iX2 xDrive30 offers a familiar yet refined electric driving experience, with a balanced blend of performance and practicality. While it may not excel in range compared to some competitors, it stands out for its unique design and premium features. Be cautious with options to avoid significant price escalation.

It offers a premium experience with some advanced features, but buyers should be cautious about adding too many options, as the price can quickly exceed $100,000.
